APRIL 2005 PROCLAIMED ORAL
HEALTH MONTH
Brush-a-Mania
is an annual program designed to promote oral health and awareness
among young children. Our purpose is to educate and motivate children
in the City of Toronto and to bring together dentists, Rotarians,
teachers and parents to create a celebration around proper dental
care.
Mayor
David Miller proclaimed Wednesday, April 21, 2004 as "Oral
Health Day" in the City of Toronto. Over 90 schools and 30,000
students participated last year.
Brush-a-Mania
2005 will be expanded to allow any school in Ontario to participate.
The goal is 150 schools and 50,000 students. Premier Dalton McGuinty
will proclaim April 2005 Oral Health Month.
THE EVENT
Now in its fifth consecutive year of production, Brush-a-Mania,
Toronto’s official Oral Health Day event, is a non-profit
program designed for children from Junior Kindergarten to grade
6 to promote good oral health.
THE
BRUSH OFF
Each participating school will hold an assembly during the month
of April, where an Ontario Dental Association member dentist and
a Rotarian will come into the school and provide the children
with an interactive, entertaining presentation in proper dental
care. Each assembly will conclude with a Brush-Off, where all
participants brush their teeth simultaneously for 3 minutes.
THE
PROGRAM
The students track their brushes for the entire month of April
in the classroom and at home in their booklets. Each student receives
a toothbrush and a Brush-a-Mania booklet containing activities
and games, as well as, a take home chart for them to mark off
their daily brushes. Students who complete the program receive
a loot bag containing sugarless gum, stickers and a Brush-a-Mania
Club Member certificate.
